Software product release notes templates are a great way to save time. But there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. All release notes should include the following:
- Header – Product name, release number, and date of release
- Overview – An introduction with a summary of features highlighting the new features and a clear explanation of impacted users.
- Fixed issues – What was the issue, its status and the benefit to the end user.
- Enhancements – Any new features or functionalities introduced or requests addressed that were not necessarily an issue
- What’s coming – Exciting stuff team is working on (that your users should care about)
Release notes for internal purposes also contain:
- a description of how to reproduce the bugs
- Changes in prerequisites, configuration, hardware, etc. They double up as action items for stakeholders that support the release in question.
- Changes to previous release notes
- Ongoing issues/challenges/obstacles/limitations, and a plan on how the changes will be made.

This Clickup template I found is also great for keeping everyone in the loop and creating kickass release notes.
